5 Website Mistakes That Cost Small Businesses Customers
Most small business websites don't lose customers because they look bad — they lose customers because of a handful of small, fixable mistakes that quietly push people away before they ever pick up the phone. Here are the five we see most often, and why they matter more than most owners realize.
1. No phone number above the fold
If someone lands on your homepage and has to scroll or hunt to find how to contact you, you've already lost a chunk of them. Your phone number (and a "Call Now" button on mobile) should be visible the second the page loads.
2. Slow load times
Most visitors give a site about three seconds before bouncing back to the search results. Large, uncompressed images are the most common culprit — and the easiest to fix.
3. Not mobile-friendly
The majority of local searches now happen on a phone. A site that only looks right on a desktop screen is actively driving away the majority of your potential customers.
4. Outdated information
Old hours, old pricing, or a "closed for COVID" banner still sitting on the homepage tells visitors nobody's paying attention — even if the business itself is thriving.
5. No clear next step
A website without an obvious "call," "book now," or "get a quote" button leaves visitors unsure what to do next. Every page should make the next step obvious.
